Boids

Benny Yang, Yuhang Qiu

BOIDS examines how form encodes our collective feelings toward the non-human world, and how recognition transforms otherwise neutral movement. From 333 species positioned along a computationally derived spectrum from beloved to reviled, a selection is made for display. Across adjacent screens, these groups appear only as abstract, monochrome particles governed by shared underlying behaviors, stripped of the visual cues that tell us what they are. A polarizing panel reveals a second layer: the same movements take on recognizable forms. What appeared neutral moments before can suddenly feel beautiful, unsettling, or threatening.
