Green Rhythms of Central Guizhou: A Visual Exploration of Fish Mint in Guiyang’s Local Cuisine
Green Rhythms of Central Guizhou is a data-driven visual and interactive artwork exploring Guiyang’s food culture through fish mint (Houttuynia cordata), a distinctive local ingredient whose pungent aroma evokes both familiarity and aversion. Through six interconnected visual chapters, the work traces fish mint from mountain landscapes and cultivation patterns to seasonal rhythms, culinary traditions, sensory perception, and urban memory. Geographical, agricultural, culinary, and olfactory data are transformed into plant-inspired visual metaphors, revealing the relationships between ecology, food, and everyday life. The interactive experience extends this exploration into time, movement, and sound. Visitors journey through a day in Guiyang, discovering scenes of morning markets, home cooking, shared meals, and night markets. By interacting with ingredients, utensils, cooking actions, and sensory elements, they gradually compose a personalized audiovisual experience, A Day’s Song. Together, the visualizations and interactive experience transform the cultural rhythms of an everyday ingredient into a living portrait of Guiyang, inviting audiences to explore how food connects place, perception, and collective memory.
